FAQ Page
What is Toastmasters? From a humble beginning in 1924 at the YMCA in Santa Ana, California, Toastmasters has grown to become a world leader in helping people become more competent and comfortable in front of an audience. The nonprofit organization now has nearly 235,000 members in 11,700 clubs in 92 countries, offering a proven – and enjoyable! – way to practice and hone communication and leadership skills. What are meetings like? Most Toastmasters meetings are comprised of approximately 20 people who meet weekly for an hour or two. Participants practice and learn skills by filling a meeting role, ranging from giving a prepared speech or an impromptu one to serving as timer, evaluator or grammarian. Who runs these meetings? There is no instructor; instead, each speech and meeting is critiqued by a member in a positive manner, focusing on what was done right and what could be improved. What do meetings involve.Meetings have 3 main segments. During the table topics, participants are able to deliver one minute long speeches, and have one minute to prepare for them. During prepared speeches, the participants use club manuals to build confidence by using their public speaking skills. Lastly, all members are evaluated by their peers, to help test and develop their skills in a supportive environment. Do I have to ask permission before attending a meeting of a club? No.
Unlike some other organizations, where one must have a
sponsoring member who invites you to the meeting and
introduces you to the group, Toastmasters welcomes all guests.
How receptive are clubs to new members?Since most people are genuinely terrified of public speaking,
Toastmasters has its hands full recruiting members. There's
virtually no chance that you won't be enthusiastically
welcomed into any club you join and immediately be considered
one of the gang.
What should my main objective be as a new Toastmasters member? Well, there are two "right" answers to this question. The first is that
your main objective should be to attend every meeting you can and
participate to the fullest, helping yourself and the other members of
the club to become better communicators. The other "right" answer is
that you should be working toward the CTM award.
